The Rotary Club of New Bern Breakfast presented a symbolic check for $10,000 to Habitat for Humanity of Craven County at their regular meeting on February 15.
This check represents the amount raised through member donations and pledges for a special Rotary-Habitat Build Project. A groundbreaking for this Habitat home #80 was held on January 20th and included a large group of members from the Rotary Club of New Bern and the Rotary Club of New Bern Breakfast, Habitat Board, homeowners, and staff as well as representatives from the City, Craven County, and the community.
This home build project represents a partnership between the two Rotary clubs in Greater New Bern and the local Habitat for Humanity affiliate to work with another local family on construction of their home in the Pembroke community. Over 150 local Rotarians have committed to raising the funds and putting in hours of volunteer time necessary to complete construction of this home build partnership over the next six months.
Several fundraisers are being scheduled over the next six months by both clubs to support this project. On the third Friday of each month, four area businesses (Capt. Ratty’s, Persimmons, Brewery 99, and Nautical Star on Middle) are participating in the Breakfast club’s “Pints and Pinots” to offer 10% of their beer and wine sales between 6:00 and 8:00 pm. The Rotary Club of New Bern is committing proceeds from their annual Sham-Rockin’ event in March for this collaborative project. Plans for other fundraising events are being finalized.
