Habitat of Craven County mourns the death of former President Jimmy Carter
Habitat for Humanity of Craven County (HFHCC) is deeply saddened by the passing of former U.S. President Jimmy Carter, a tireless advocate for affordable and decent housing for all. For more than three decades, President Carter and his wife, Rosalynn, dedicated their time and leadership to Habitat for Humanity, contributing to building and improving homes while transforming lives across the globe.
President Carter passed away peacefully at his home in Plains, Georgia, on Dec. 29 at the age of 100, surrounded by his family. Our prayers are with the Carter family during this difficult time.
President Carter profoundly impacted countless lives through his unwavering commitment to service and his passion for ensuring everyone has a decent place to live. The Carters’ dedication to Habitat for Humanity significantly raised global awareness of our mission and work. We are forever grateful for the transformative legacy they leave behind.
Following their departure from the White House, the Carters sought meaningful ways to continue their dedication to social justice and human rights. Their journey with Habitat for Humanity began in March 1984 near their home in Americus, Georgia, where the organization was founded. Later that year, the Carters participated in a project in New York City’s Lower East Side, marking the inception of what would become the annual Jimmy & Rosalynn Carter Work Project. Over the years, the collaborated with over 108,000 volunteers in 14 countries, contributing to the construction, renovation, and repair of 4,447 Habitat homes.
In recognition of their extraordinary commitment to Habitat’s vision of a world where everyone has a decent place to live, President and Mrs. Carter were named the inaugural Habitat Humanitarians in 2016.
Since its inception in 1976, Habitat for Humanity has served more than 62 million people worldwide. The Carters’ work with Habitat exemplified a simple but profound truth - that affordable housing is not just a goal, it’s a basic need that requires collective action.
HFHCC Executive Director Tracey Lilly noted the lasting legacy of the Carters’ work and the inspiration it provides for the local Habitat team.
“We may be saying goodbye to President Carter the man, but the spirit of what he represented - a selfless dedication to serving others - is carried forward here in Craven County every day by the employees and volunteers who work with Habitat for Humanity to create a better life for our citizens,” Lilly said.
